Assignment One: The CAFO System

Peer Review: See syllabus
Due Date: See syllabus
Assignment Length: 4 pages, double-spaced

Assignment Goal

Students should create an argument that uses keywords from The CAFO Reader to explain and define what animal factories do, how they work, and what they mean.

Assignment Description

Most of the material we're reading from The CAFO Reader revolves around defining CAFOs and describing what is and what isn't true about their role in our present food system. In this essay, students will create an argument about the meaning of CAFOs by consolidating what they believe are the most important ideas about CAFOs into keywords. They will use these keywords in their 2-3 sentence thesis statements, define them in their introductions, and use them to propel and organize their essays. Keywords are words that unlock or explain other ideas from the text.

Essay Structure

Students will learn a basic opening to an introduction paragraph; they will learn what a thesis is and where to place it in the introduction; they will learn how to organize paragraphs according to main ideas found in topic sentences; they will learn how to directly quote from evidence and how to paraphrase that evidence; and they will learn at least one analytical writing strategy: keywords and their definitions.
